My Grandmother

I went to photograph my grandmother a couple weeks ago and she warned me she didn’t like to have her picture taken. I told her not to worry because I was a professional. She kept saying no one wants a picture of her, but she relaxed after a couple shots and soon I was able to capture the spirit of my grandmother. On the surface, she’s a sweet old woman in a tiny frail frame. But she is full of life and positive energy, and she’s not afraid to put a grown man in his place (or to make him cry if it will do him some good). She’s always cracking subtle jokes that are unexpected and quite funny. That’s the grandmother my family all knows and loves. She’s a joy to be around and I’m so glad to have captured some images that speak louder than my words ever could…

Oh, one more thing - at the end of the session I showed her a couple frames and she almost gasped with surprise, “Well, those aren’t bad at all!” Did I mention I was a professional, Grandma? I love how good photography can be redeeming; how it can help dislodge the distorted perceptions we sometimes have of ourselves. That brings me joy. Thank you, Grandma Helen!

Dan & Holly

At the moment, Holly lives overseas so her visit to Omaha was short lived and very busy. Unfortunately the weather didn’t want to cooperate with the small window we had. It was rainy and gloomy and predicted to get worse (snow!). But we were able to work with what we were given - thanks to  David Turner and a story he told me about his first magazine shoot - we grabbed an umbrella and got some unique, beautiful and interesting images!

Dan & Janine

For Dan and Janine, Iowa City is the backdrop to their dating memories so we traveled to get some images in their favorite spots. We had an amazing time - the weather was beautiful - a bit cold, but hard to notice in the midst of so much activity. And the company was great. :) Without a doubt, you two have been our most creative and adventurous couple yet! Thanks for contributing so many ideas - I love the results! And I guess so do a few regional PPA judges - one print from the session won an honorable mention award at the Heart of America (affiliated with Professional Photographers of America) print competition. More on that in a later post.

For our signature session senior portraits, we can find all sorts of unique and different looks all without leaving your very own home. Claire is an artistically minded young woman with a lot of spunk and a sweet heart. We had a great time with her - meeting people like Claire is one of the many reasons why we love our job!

A few years ago, Denise opened her own counseling care center and provided me with some valuable life coaching - I can’t say enough good things about the power of someone helping you to discover a positive vision and direction for your life!  And now the time has come to update Denise’s website with some fresh new images.  Here’s a little more info about her and her work…

Denise Nebeker is a licensed mental health professional, nationally certified counselor, and a Life Coach specializing in relationships and goal development. In addition to her Counseling and Life Coaching practice, Denise serves as adjunct faculty at Grace University’s Graduate School of Counseling in Omaha, Nebraska. She is an international consultant for the missions agencies of Campus Crusade for Christ, Word Made Flesh, and Mosaic Community Development. Certified in Critical Incident Stress Management, Denise works locally as a therapist for the National Crisis Care Network. She holds memberships in the American Counseling Association and the American Association of Christian Counselors.

Denise is a truly remarkable individual - she gives so much to so many people through out the world, and she gives from a place of honesty, humility and wisdom. I’m thankful to have known her for several years, and even more thankful to call her friend.

It was a pleasure to meet such a wonderful young woman! Our time together was brief, but this year’s Chi Omega President (Lincoln, NE chapter) impressed me with her kindness and graceful manner. It was the ideal shoot for me because of the positive atmosphere; we could really concentrate and work things out.  Each image got better and better every time the shutter clicked!  My 16-year-old cousin also accompanied us for this shoot for a high school “career shadow” assignment. If you can’t tell by the image, he did a great job holding the lights!

Last weekend, we went downtown to create some engagement portraits - and MAN was it was COLD outside! But Lisa and Dereck endured the weather and we got some great images!

Thanks so much - I really enjoyed getting to know you both. I had such a great time I wish we could do it all over again; of course I’d wait until it warms up first! Anyway, I hope you had a wonderful Valentine’s Day, and I’ll see you both soon at the viewing session.
